Beware of emails that you may receive that include a fake calendar invite or .ics file attachment. These bogus emails are used by hackers to infect computers with malware and steal user data. The unfortunate thing about modern software programs like Outlook is that the email and calendar applications are so tightly integrated with each other that a calendar invite can be added to your calendar automatically. Hackers embed malicious links or code inside these fake calendar invites to commit cyber-crimes against the email recipients.
Always proceed with caution when receiving emails that include file attachments. Phishing email attacks are one of the most common and effective methods that hackers use to trick innocent victims. Immediately remove bogus calendar invites from your calendar if they get added. Do not click on any links inside these calendar invites. Do not click “Accept” or “Decline” on the calendar invites. Simply delete suspicious emails from strangers especially if the emails include file attachments. Stay vigilant!
